For about three decades the road up Mt.Major has been closed to the public. The public use of this area has been restricted with those interested and walking and mountain bikes. Historic contacts have enabled me to have a key to the gateway accessing the Mt.Major road on the proviso that the gate is unlocked only when our fleet enters or exits the area.

The plan: gather at the clubroom carpark, Grahamvale, about 9.15am with a departure at 9.30am and travel to Dookie along the New Dookie Road. Bring goodies for morning tea. At the CWA gardens at Dookie there will be a toilet stop as there are no facilities at top of Mt.Major. The convoy travels east from Dookie, turns right at Cashel Cemetery onto the road to Nalinga. After the bends take the first turn on the right, assemble at the Mt.Major gate entrance. This stop will provide members with their first significant photo opportunity on the day….. finding the appropriate University of Melbourne padlock to undo. Access is restricted because satisfactory funding for road maintenance and safety has not been established. Little has happened to the track since it was sealed in the late 1950s when television and radio transmitters were erected.

Hopefully the weather will be favorable and will enable some great pictures of the surrounding landscapes which will include canola in full bloom. Bring a chair for morning tea (you provide) while having a chat and enjoying the scenery. About 11.30am we will leave Mt.Major and drive across to the Goorambat Hotel for lunch and their proven hospitality.
